Dear amigos,
Every once in a while, a identity system comes along that completely rewrites the rules of music branding—and Studio Gruhl’s work for Berlin techno label Spellbound is a masterclass in how to build an ever expanding visual identity in movement.
Founded by DJ and producer Shaleen (formerly of BPitch Control and SURD), Spellbound was born out of a desire to create a female-led techno imprint rooted in raw, vinyl-only approach. But rather than handing over a standard brand book filled with rigid guidelines and static logo placements, Studio Gruhl treated this music branding project like an evolving instrument.
Pre-Internet Berlin and Techno Music
To give Spellbound a visual voice that matches Shaleen’s analog sets, the studio bypassed polished corporate aesthetics and looked back to the raw energy of early ’90s Berlin—when techno lived in abandoned warehouses, factory floors, and DIY flyers pinned to concrete walls.
Instead of treating these influences as simple mood board references, Studio Gruhl literally dragged them into the design process: scanning ripped posters from street corners, digitizing physical textures, and turning ambient urban noise into rugged 3D forms and gradient cut-outs.
A flexible Design System
At the center of Spellbound’s identity is an open, modular collage canvas—a flexible grid where elements can be dialed up for high-octane posters or turned down for clean digital layouts.
Rather than locking the identity behind paywalled typography or closed assets, the studio intentionally built the identity around accessible open-source typefaces like Anton and Nimbus Sans L. This intentional choice ensures that future guest artists, producers, and designers can jump straight in, remix the asset library, and build onto the label’s visual story without friction.
