Dear Amigos,
We often think of archives as dusty basements filled with forgotten papers, but what if an archive could be a tactile experience that feels alive? This was the question faced by DIP (the Association of Design and Advertising Professionals of the Region of Murcia) when they sought to preserve their local graphic heritage. Beyond a book, they needed a vessel for collective memory. To bring this to life, they turned to the independent creative Álvaro García Ruano, who transformed a historical compilation into “An Indelible Mark” (Una huella imborrable), a project that redefines how we interact with design history by treating it as an emotional journey rather than a linear narrative.
A Box of Echoes: The Concept of Memory
The core of “An Indelible Mark” lies in this question: where is material memory stored? Álvaro’s research led him to the memory box, a physical icon of personal preservation. Consequently, the project takes the form of a sleek metal box, a durable container that protects a heterogeneous collection of documents. Inside you’ll find a wide selection of illustrative images, and various singular objects, all gathered to honor those who have contributed decisively to the development of advertising communication and design in the Region of Murcia. These elements follow the “logic of memory,” appearing without a fixed order, allowing the reader to become an explorer who reconstructs the narrative through their own gestures and discoveries.
The Digital Grid Meets a Physical Medium
In terms of typography, the project utilizes PX Grotesk, a typeface designed by Nicolas Eigenheer and published by Optimo Foundry. It embeds a pixel-grid structure into a optically adjusted grotesque shape. This choice creates a contradictory relationship between a grid and a flexible line, mirroring how memory itself is a mix of rigid facts and fluid emotional impressions. The font’s signature pixelated curves provide a sharp aesthetic that bridges the gap between the digital future of design and the physical artifacts preserved within the metal box.
